Ways You Can Prevent and Repair Sun Damage

Houston Prevent and Repair Sun DamageWhen we’re young we never worry about protecting our glowing, clear, firm skin. We think that we will never grow old and aging just won’t happen to us. Well, unfortunately that’s just not true.

I am turning 35 next year and I am starting to see brown spots, enlarged pores, loss of elasticity, and telangectasias (small broken capillaries). I didn’t start taking care of my skin until I was about 26 years old. I never wore sunblock, washed my face with soap, and used body lotion on my face when I felt dry. Yes, I was your typical American girl, not taking care of my skin…but thinking I was.

Now that the damage is coming to the surface, I want to share with you ways that you can prevent and repair the awful sun damage that you have done or may do to your skin.

  1. Always, always, always wear a Sunblock. Everyday – cloudy or not. It MUST be an SPF 25 or higher with Zinc oxide or Titanium Dioxide as the main ingredient. If it doesn’t have these ingredients, they DO NOT protect your skin from UV radiation penetration.
  2. Around the age of 30, start using a retinol. For those who don’t have extensive damage, a non-prescription may do you justice. For those who have more damage, ask your doctor if a prescription like Tretinoin or Retin A is best for you. Prescription retinol has been proven to slough off dead cells therefore smoothing and softening the skin, stimulating new collagen which reduces the appearance of pores, fine lines and wrinkles and firms the skin. In addition, it can help with hormonal breakouts as well.
  3. For brown spots, use a clinically proven skin brightener / lightener. Again, for those of you with minimal sun damage or for people that don’t mind waiting for results, a more natural way to reduce damage will include ingredients like L-Arbutin and anti-oxidants. For those who want more rapid results, you may want to ask your doctor about prescribing something like Hydroquinone. This helps to control the pigmentation from over-producing and is used as a prep, prior to skin brightening treatments as.
  4. Use clinically proven skin care for the FACE. Don’t use products that are made for the body on your face! Facial skin care was specifically made for the face. Molecular sizes are smaller so that the ingredients have the ability to penetrate the skin therefore increasing the benefits from the product. Body products typically cannot penetrate the skin as many of them have thick emulsions that clog the pores of the face and do not allow your skin to breathe.
  5. Ask your doctor or aesthetician what treatment is best for you. There are a lot of great treatments on the market today that can help get your skin back in shape. IPL, chemical peels, collagen remodeling, microdermabrasion, epidermal leveling, laser skin tightening, Botox & fillers…and the list goes on. Although there are many options, not all options are right for everyone. Your doctor or aesthetician can help educate you on which procedures are best for you and why.
