How Important is Water for My Skin?

Important for Water to SkinWe all know that water is an important part of our daily dietary needs but do we really understand just how important our water intake is in relation to healthy, younger looking skin?

Did you know that 90% of our bodies are water? Pretty fascinating huh. Literally every part of the body needs sufficient water in order to not only survive but to thrive. We already know that our skin is our largest organ so it is obvious that water is vital to facilitate many of its functions. The skin is responsible for temperature regulation, purging toxins, blood circulation, overall hydration to not only the skin but storing for other parts of the body and many other functions. Did you also know that dehydration is the #1 cause of daytime fatigue and most often people mistake dehydration for hunger pangs and end up overeating?

We know that water intake is vitally important for overall body health but it is equally important in achieving healthy, radiant skin. Picture this for a moment…take a grape in one hand and a raisin in the other. The grape is an example of a well hydrated skin cell, round, soft, plump, smooth in texture and color, and looks delicious. The raisin on the other hand represents a dehydrated skin cell, dull in color, rough and wrinkled in texture and doesn’t appear too appetizing. Think of this on a much larger scale….cluster these together and you have a mental image of what your skin looks like. Sufficient water levels are imperative for healthy cells, without it they die. We always discuss sufficient water intake as part of every skin care regimen no matter if it is concerning an acne patient, patient with fine lines and wrinkles or just a patient working to maintain healthy, youthful skin.

There are specific formulas to determine the appropriate amount of daily water per individual however it is safe to say 8 (8 ounce) glasses of water a day will do the trick. Remember, if you are sweating or have strenuous activity you will need to increase your intake appropriately.

What do you have to lose? Try it for 1 week and be amazed at the visible improvements you will have in your skin and overall the way you feel. When you contemplate a soda ask yourself if you are choosing a Grape Day or a Raisin Day!
