Understanding Your Liposuction: The 4 Questions to Ask Your Plastic Surgeon

Houston Liposuction ProcedureChances are, if you haven’t had Liposuction, you know someone who has.  It is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the world; in the United States alone, over 325,000 Liposuction procedures were performed in 2011.  No matter how common the surgery has become, Liposuction is still an invasive procedure, requiring heavy consideration.  To ensure your Liposuction will be safe and effective, with long-lasting results, there are four key questions to ask yourself and your plastic surgeon before your procedure.

1. Are you a good candidate for Liposuction?

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the best candidates for Liposuction will have localized fat deposits, causing disproportionate body contours (such as “love-handles”), which remain even after diet and exercise.  Since Liposuction will only remove the underlying fat cells, ASAPS recommends that the skin above the target area be smooth and tight.

2. What kind of Liposuction is best for you?

Liposuction procedures can be very safe and effective.  After a sedative and anesthetic are administered, very small incisions are made under the skin of the targeted area.  Depending on your body type, and the amount of fatty tissue being removed, your surgeon will either use an ultrasound, or a laser, to melt the fat cells before aspiration.  Please make sure to choose a Board Certificated Plastic Surgeon to perform the surgery.  Procedures like Cool Lipo, Water Lipo, Fast Lipo, Body Jet Lipo, Vaser Lipo and Magic Lipo may sound great but the surgeon is the main factor in receiving the best results.

3. Will my Liposuction be safe?

Yes, as long as you do your homework.  Because Liposuction has become so trendy, many untrained practitioners want in on the profits.  Gynecologists and Dermatologists, for example, do not have the appropriate training and skill to perform this invasive procedure.  Only consider Liposuction from a reputable plastic surgeon, board certified with the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

4. Will the results of my Liposuction be permanent?

Yes – as long as you take good care of your new body.  Since each person is born with a certain number of fat cells, those that are removed through Liposuction are gone forever.  However, if after your procedure, you are not conscious about diet and exercise, you run the risk of plumping up the remaining fat cells, even around the targeted area.
