Four Reasons for a Back Lift

Back Lift

Body contouring procedures are used on many parts of the body. They reshape the treated area and create a more appealing silhouette. One such procedure is the back lift.

In properly skilled and experienced hands, a back lift achieves results unattainable with other techniques. This treatment is not commonly requested and thus not as well-known and widely available as it should be. Read on to learn why patients are starting to pay attention.

1. Your Body Hasn’t Recovered From Pregnancy and Childbirth

This is the most common reason for women, as no woman’s body goes through the process of pregnancy and childbirth without causing some issues.

2. Weight Gain and Weight Loss

Weight gain stretches out the body, just as pregnancy does in the stomach area, but in different areas depending on where you are predisposed to store fat. This is hereditary. Some people store fat in their waist, some in their thighs, and for others it can be evenly distributed – each person is unique. And as wonderful and healthy as losing that weight is, sometimes the skin can lose its elasticity and remain saggy.

3. Natural Effects of Aging

Saggy skin is also a natural part of the aging process. And just as fat is deposited in different areas of the body, depending on your genetic predisposition, so can skin sag based on familial traits.

4. Clothes Don’t Fit Right

And sometimes your clothes don’t fit right. This could just be due to the cut of the clothes, as each person’s body handles excess body fat and aging differently. Our bodies are all unique and different shapes. And for little body issues, a bit of tailoring can fix the problem. But if you are constantly having trouble finding a pair of pants that fit right, a back lift could be the solution. (Read below to see why.) Make your wardrobe stand out, whether on the beach, at work, or a party.

How Body Contouring With a Back Lift Works

After extensive trials, the procedure was first announced in 2008 by Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons official medical journal. What makes it unique is that the incision follows the undergarment line allowing any, usually light, scarring to be concealed naturally by undergarments.

There are two types of back lifts that smooth the appearance:

  1. A lower back lift that creates a slim waist and raises the buttocks. A lot of the time this is performed as part of a lower body lift. Excess lower back skin and fat are removed and the buttocks are lifted. The incision runs along the back just above the buttocks where the underwear waistband rests.
  2. The upper back lift addresses bulging fat and excess skin beneath the bra line. The incision is placed here and any scarring is concealed by the bra.

They can be performed separately or at the same time. The surgery takes about two hours and is done under general anesthesia at Houston Surgery Center, conveniently located in the same building as our office.

Recovering From a Back Lift

As with any surgical procedure, there are the usual risks associated with infection, bruising and swelling, which are always minimized with proper care. Patients can return to work after seven to 10 days. And exercise and other strenuous activity can be resumed after six weeks.
