Why More and More Patients Are Working on Their Butt

Working on Their Buttocks

Last year, plastic surgeries that enhance the buttocks area were again some of the most popular cosmetic procedures. According to numbers from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons:

  • Buttock augmentation with fat grafting, popularly known as the Brazilian Butt Lift, increased by 15 percent in 2014 after increasing 16 percent in 2013.
  • The number of buttock implant procedures went up by a whopping 98 percent in 2014.
  • Buttock lifts increased by 44 percent in 2014 – and have gone up 158 percent since 2000.

Men, who make up 9 percent of all cosmetic procedures (both surgical and minimally-invasive), are also undergoing more buttocks-enhancing procedures.

  • In 2013 men made up 13 percent of buttock implants recipients, increasing 12 percent from 2012 – the first year these numbers were surveyed.
  • Buttock lifts for men were 8 percent of the total in 2013, increasing 283 percent since 2000.

The demand for a more curvaceous backside has happened for a number of reasons.

Popular Culture Is Changing

Last year Kim Kardashian’s butt “broke the internet” with her cover photo for Paper Magazine. But that was just the latest milestone in the ascendancy of the derriere over other body parts. For years other celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj, and Shakira have been shaking it up for the butt. And this new enthusiasm for robust derrieres has caused more and more women, and men, around the world to seek out cosmetic butt augmentation.

Another reason for the rising numbers of butt augmentation procedures is the increasing safety of the procedure as more and more highly skilled, and well-trained doctors perform it. It is always important to see a board certified plastic surgeon for any surgery. When you work with a qualified doctor, he or she will be able to accurately tell you what to expect, provide patient references, review your medical history, and have the proper surgical facilities and protocols in place.

In the past, cosmetic butt augmentation involved patient going to untrained, often illegal surgeons that used an assortment of untested, sometimes dangerous, augmentation materials. Sometimes patients got the butt they were looking for, but the percentage of those patients who also had serious medical complications, even death, was high.

By going to a board certified plastic surgeon you are assured that all the materials used are safe and FDA-approved. A butt lift is about more than just your butt. Any doctor performing surgery always needs to consider the overall health of the patient. And someone performing injections in an unsafe environment, without the proper training, won’t or can’t do that.

The Wrong Materials

Board certified plastic surgeons sometimes perform butt-lift procedures using silicone implants, similar to what is used for breast augmentation, but sized and shaped for the buttocks. However a real doctor will never use silicone injections. Silicone injections to the buttocks area are not FDA-approved, and black market practitioners often use silicone that isn’t even approved for medical use.

Silicone injected in this way can migrate to other areas of the body, possibly causing infection and even breathing problems like pneumonia if it reaches the lungs. And for patients lucky enough not to have resulting medical issues can have cosmetic issues. Over time these patients may notice the injection area becoming lumpy and hard, with the resulting mass sometimes shifting to other areas.

The Right Materials

The safe, FDA approved option for adding volume to the backside is fat transfer (or fat grafting). This is what’s often termed a Brazilian Butt Lift. The procedure takes fat from one area of the body and uses it in the buttocks. Since it is fat from your body, there is no risk of rejection by the immune system or other side effects. Because this method requires that you have enough fat in other areas to donate to the buttocks, it may not be right for every patient. In that case, your surgeon may recommend another option like an implant.

The Right Results

The results of a Brazilian Butt Lift are immediately visible. But it can take up to a year to see the full results. At first, the butt may appear very full, but the volume will decrease over time. Your body will acclimate to or even reabsorb some of the transferred fat. This is why the surgeon may inject more fat than needed, so that you end up with the resulting butt size you desire.
