Q - What should I expect during a consultation for chin augmentation?
During the consultation for chin augmentation, Dr. Vitenas will go over your complete medical history, take the time to understand your goals, and answer all of your questions. You will see pre-op and post-op photos of previous chin augmentation patients, and computer imaging will be used to help you visualize your own personal results. Dr. Vitenas performs the surgery for chin augmentation at the Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital and its affiliated outpatient facility, the Day Surgery Center.

Q - What type of anesthesia is used for chin augmentation?
Chin augmentation is performed with general anesthesia.

Q - How is chin augmentation performed?
For chin augmentation, a small incision may be made in the crease beneath the chin or inside of the lower lip. After making the incision, an appropriately sized implant is inserted and placed against the bone of the mandible.

Q - How long does the actual chin augmentation procedure last?
The surgery for chin augmentation is about one hour in length.

Q - Where are the incisions made for chin augmentation?
The incision for chin augmentation is a small one which may be made inside of the lower lip or in the crease beneath the chin.  

Q - Does chin augmentation leave scars?
When the incision is made on the inside of the lower lip, there is no visible scarring. Incisions made in the crease beneath the chin result in a small, well-concealed scar.

Q - Is chin augmentation a painful procedure?
Patients may experience some discomfort, and it may be difficult to talk, smile or perform other facial movements at first. Medication can help to manage any discomfort that patients do experience.

Q - What is the recovery like after chin augmentation?
Some swelling and bruising may occur after chin augmentation. Dietary restrictions may be necessary. Talking, smiling and other facial movements may be uncomfortable at first, and discomfort can be managed with medication.

Q - When will I be able to return to work after my chin augmentation surgery?
Patients are usually able to return to work within three to five days after surgery.

Q - When will I be able to exercise after my chin augmentation procedure?
Patients will need to postpone strenuous activities and exercise for four to six weeks.

Q - When are the stitches removed after the chin augmentation procedure?
The stitches are removed five days after surgery.

Q - What are the risks or possible complications of chin augmentation?
The potential risks or complications associated with chin augmentation may include bleeding, infection, scarring, and loss of sensation to the lower lip.

Q - Is the cost of chin augmentation covered by insurance?
While patients should consult with their own insurance carrier, chin augmentation procedures which are performed for purely cosmetic purposes are generally not covered by insurance.
