Dr. Vitenas performs dermabrasion at the Day Surgery Center, an outpatient facility at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital that is adjacent to his office. Dermabrasion is performed with general anesthesia and takes thirty minutes to an hour to complete. During the procedure, a mechanical sanding device is used on the skin. This device allows for precise control of the treated areas as well as depth of penetration. Compared to other skin resurfacing procedures like chemical peels and laser resurfacing, dermabrasion is a much more controllable procedure.
The recovery after dermabrasion takes about two weeks. Patients may experience some tingling, burning or aching of the treated area, and discomfort can be managed with medication. Talking and eating may be difficult at first. Redness and swelling is common, and the swelling will begin to fade within a few days to a week. Work can usually be resumed after two weeks, though more strenuous activities may need to be postponed for four to six weeks.
