Meet Dr. Vitenas
The Fine Art of Natural Cosmetic Surgery

Q - What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure which removes excess fat in select areas in order to improve the shape and contour of the body.

Q - Who is a candidate for liposuction?
Men and women who are in good health and looking to improve the body shape and contour may be good candidates for liposuction.

Q - What should I expect during a consultation for liposuction?
During the consultation for liposuction, Dr. Vitenas will go over your complete medical history, take the time to understand your goals, and answer all of your questions. You will see pre-op and post-op photos of previous liposuction patients, and computer imaging will be used to help you visualize your own personal results. Dr. Vitenas will discuss reasonable and expected outcomes, and explain the details of the procedure including the technique, the recovery, the risks, the costs, and financing options.

Q - Where is the surgery for liposuction performed?
Dr. Vitenas performs the liposuction procedure in his office operating suite and at the adjacent Day Surgery Center, an outpatient facility at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital

Q - What type of anesthesia is used for liposuction?
Liposuction is performed with general anesthesia.

Q - How is liposuction performed?
Dr. Vitenas uses the “super wet” technique for liposuction. For this technique, the treatment area is first infused with a solution containing saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine which causes the fat to become swollen and firm. A small cannula, or hollow tube, is then inserted through small half-inch incisions and the fat is suctioned out. The super wet technique allows for the safe removal of large volumes of fat without the need for blood transfusions.

Q - How long is the liposuction procedure?
Liposuction may take anywhere from one to four hours to perform depending on the number and size of areas being treated.

Q - Does liposuction leave scars?
The incisions made for liposuction are small and well-concealed in inconspicuous areas like the natural creases of the skin, resulting in imperceptible scarring.

Q - Is liposuction a painful procedure?
Patients may experience a sore or burning sensation after liposuction, though this can be managed with medication.

Q - How long is the recovery after liposuction?
The recovery after liposuction takes about one week.

Q - What is the recovery like after liposuction?
Patients can expect a recovery time of about one week after liposuction. There may be some bruising, swelling, and numbness, though many of the newer techniques, including the super wet technique, are associated with decreased bruising and swelling. Patients are often required to wear a special compression garment similar to a girdle for several weeks after the procedure.

Q - When will I be able to return to work after my liposuction procedure?
Patients are usually able to return to work one week after liposuction.

Q - When will I be able to exercise after my liposuction procedure?
Patients will need to postpone strenuous activities and exercise for about four to six weeks after liposuction.

Q - What are the risks or possible complications of liposuction?
The potential risks or complications associated with liposuction may include bleeding, infection, scarring, blood clots, and fat emboli.

Q - Is the cost of liposuction covered by insurance?
While patients should consult with their own insurance carrier, liposuction performed for cosmetic purposes alone is generally not covered by insurance.

Q - Is it possible to finance my liposuction procedure?
There are financing options available for plastic surgery, and Dr. Vitenas will discuss these with you during your initial liposuction consultation. You may also visit the following website: http://www.cosmeticfeeplan.com/.
