Meet Dr. Vitenas
The Fine Art of Natural Cosmetic Surgery

Q - What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, also known as nose surgery, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to change the appearance of the nose and create better harmony among the facial features. The surgery can also help to relieve functional breathing obstructions.

Q - Who is a candidate for rhinoplasty?
Men and women who are in good health and looking to improve the appearance of the nose may be good candidates for rhinoplasty.

Q - What should I expect during a consultation for rhinoplasty?
During the consultation for rhinoplasty, Dr. Vitenas will go over your complete medical history, take the time to understand your goals, and answer all of your questions. You will see pre-op and post-op photos of previous rhinoplasty patients, and computer imaging will be used to help you visualize your own personal results. Dr. Vitenas will discuss reasonable and expected outcomes, and explain the details of the procedure including the technique, the recovery, the risks, the costs, and financing options.

Q - Where is the surgery for rhinoplasty performed?
Dr. Vitenas performs the rhinoplasty surgery in his office operating suite and at the adjacent Day Surgery Center, which is an outpatient facility at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital.

Q - What type of anesthesia is used for rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is performed with general anesthesia.

Q - How is rhinoplasty performed?
For rhinoplasty, incisions may be made entirely on the inside of the nose (endonasal or closed rhinoplasty), or they may be made on the inside of the nose along with a small incision made on the skin between the nostrils (external or open rhinoplasty). After the incisions are made, the nose is sculpted to a new shape.

Q - How long is the surgery for rhinoplasty?
The surgery for rhinoplasty is about one to three hours long.

Q - Where are the incisions made for rhinoplasty?
The incisions for rhinoplasty may be made entirely on the inside of the nose, which is known as endonasal or closed rhinoplasty, or there may be an additional small incision made on the skin between the nostrils, which is known as external or open rhinoplasty.

Q - Does rhinoplasty leave scars?
For endonasal or closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are confined to the inside of the nose and result in no visible scarring. For external or open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made on the skin between the nostrils on the underside of the nose, resulting in a small, well-concealed scar.

Q - Is rhinoplasty a painful procedure?
Patients may experience some discomfort at first after rhinoplasty, but this can be managed with medication.

Q - How long is the recovery after rhinoplasty?
The recovery after rhinoplasty takes about one to two weeks.

Q - What is the recovery like after rhinoplasty?
Patients can expect a recovery time of about one to two weeks. Swelling and bruising are common. While most of the swelling will dissipate in about two weeks, some unnoticeable swelling can take as much as a year to fade. Patients may also experience some bleeding.

Q - When will I be able to return to work after my rhinoplasty surgery?
Patients are often able to return to work within a few days after rhinoplasty.

Q - When will I be able to exercise after my rhinoplasty procedure?
Patients will need to postpone strenuous activities and exercise for about four to six weeks.

Q - When are the stitches removed after rhinoplasty?
It will be about three days after the rhinoplasty surgery when the stitches are removed.

Q - What are the risks or possible complications of rhinoplasty?
The potential risks or complications associated with rhinoplasty may include bleeding, infection, and scarring.

Q - Is the cost of rhinoplasty covered by insurance?
While patients should consult with their own insurance carrier, rhinoplasty is generally not covered by insurance when performed for cosmetic purposes alone though some amount of coverage may be available when treating breathing problems or deformities.

Q - Is it possible to finance my rhinoplasty procedure?
There are financing options available for plastic surgery, and Dr. Vitenas will discuss these with you during your initial rhinoplasty consultation. You may also visit the following website: http://www.cosmeticfeeplan.com/.
