Dr. Vitenas performs rhinoplasty in his office operating suite and at the adjacent Day Surgery Center, an outpatient facility at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital. The surgery takes one to three hours to complete and is performed with general anesthesia. The incisions for rhinoplasty may be made entirely on the inside of the nose, which is known as the endonasal or closed approach. In some cases, the incisions may be made on the inside of the nose along with a small external incision made on the underside of the nose between the nostrils, which is known as the external or open approach. Once the incisions are made, the nose is then sculpted to the desired shape.
The recovery after rhinoplasty takes about one to two weeks. Patients can expect some swelling and bruising. The majority of swelling will fade within about two weeks, though it can take as much as a year for some unnoticeable swelling to dissipate. Some bleeding may also occur. The nose may ache and patients may experience a dull headache at first, though any discomfort can be managed with medication. The stitches are removed about three days after surgery. Patients are often able to return to work within a few days after surgery, though more strenuous activities will need to be postponed for four to six weeks.
