Rhinoplasty, also known as nose surgery, is a plastic surgery procedure which can alter the appearance of the nose and help to relieve functional breathing obstructions. Because the nose play a prominent role in the balance of one’s facial appearance, changing the nose can achieve better harmony between the nose and the rest of the face. A well-proportioned nose that is harmonious with the other facial features can have a tremendous and powerful impact on our overall facial appearance and the way that others view us. Good candidates for rhinoplasty include men and women who are in good health and are looking to improve the appearance of the nose
Dr. Vitenas performs rhinoplasty in his office operating suite and at the adjacent Day Surgery Center, an outpatient facility at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital in Houston (located near Pearland, Friendswood, and Clear Lake). The surgery takes one to three hours to complete and is performed with general anesthesia.
The incisions for rhinoplasty may be made entirely on the inside of the nose, which is known as the endonasal or closed approach. In some cases, the incisions may be made on the inside of the nose along with a small external incision made on the underside of the nose between the nostrils, which is known as the external or open approach. Once the incisions are made, the nose is then sculpted to the desired shape.
The recovery after rhinoplasty takes about one to two weeks. Patients can expect some swelling and bruising. The majority of swelling will fade within about two weeks, though it can take as much as a year for some unnoticeable swelling to dissipate. Some bleeding may also occur. The nose may ache and patients may experience a dull headache at first, though any discomfort can be managed with medication. The stitches are removed about three days after surgery. Patients are often able to return to work within a few days after surgery, though more strenuous activities will need to be postponed for four to six weeks.
