Studies show that approximately 1 in 20 Americans have Rosacea. This skin disease is characterized by a general flushing of the skin which most commonly affects the cheeks, nose, chin, forehead, and ears, however, it can also appear on the chest or back. Rosacea occurs most often in women and men between the ages of 30-50.
There are 4 known stages of Rosacea which can help patients identify the symptoms and know when to seek medical attention. As with any other disease, early detection is the key to successful management.
| Type 1/Facial Redness- Frequent flushing that may disappear and reappear, Warming or burning sensation, Dryness, Appearance of telangectasia, or broken blood vessels on the face |
Type 2/Bumps and Pimples Persistent flushing, Telangectasia, Pustules and papules |
| Type 3/Skin Thickening Thickening of skin, Nodules, Enlargement of nose known as Rhinophyma, Swelling, Redness, and telangiectasia |
Type 4/Eye Irritation Redness and dryness, Itching and tearing, Sensation of grit, Light sensitivity and blurred vision |
If the symptoms are ignored this disease almost always progresses and can bring significant social and emotional effects which greatly affect quality of life. The cause is unknown however there are several triggers that have been identified.
Spicy food, alcohol, hot beverages, caffeine, strenuous exercise, and extreme hot or cold temperatures
Cosmetics containing alcohol and glycolic acid, strong cortisone medications
Avoid rubbing and scrubbing
*Sun exposure exacerbates Rosacea, therefore use a broad spectrum block of SPF 30 or higher on a daily basis and reapply every 2 hours when exposed for longer periods.
*Doctors recommend to those who suffer with Rosacea to keep a diary and note your personal triggers.
Once you’ve been diagnosed, there are several treatment options available to you here at Vitenas Skin Institute. The two most common treatments are IPL or Photofacial and Laser Genesis. Both of these treatments significantly reduce the appearance of general redness as well as telangiectasia and have no associated “down time”. Depending on the progression of the condition a mild antibiotic may also be used to reduce inflammation.
