Selfies Spark Cosmetic Surgery

Selfies Spark Cosmetic Surgery

The arrival of the selfie has taken social media by storm. Very few people don’t take pictures of themselves now. More than a few of us are totally obsessed with them.

The selfie forms how the world sees us – and the way we see ourselves. Unfortunately, these pictures can also cause a big blow to the self-esteem.

Posting our picture gives us a chance to reflect on our image, picking out all of the positives and negatives. Because of this, selfies are inducing many people to make their way to the cosmetic surgeon’s office. One in four plastic surgery patients say they are unhappy with their online pictures. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) reports that surgeons have seen a 58 percent increase in the procedures since early 2013. Not every selfie-subject is looking for the same cosmetic procedure, however. This quest is greatly impacted by one’s age and sex:

Under 21:

The under 21 group of selfie-snappers usually turn to cosmetic surgery to correct a lifelong issue. This age group accounts for over a quarter of all rhinoplasty patients, and most otoplasty procedures fall into this segment, as well.

22 to 34:

The prime selfie-age is between 22 and 34. This marks the time people start to notice little things they want to change. Skin rejuvenating procedures such as chemical peels and laser treatments can reduce the signs of sun damage and early aging. Breast augmentation perks around this age, also.

35-60:

People between 35 and 60 make up more than half of all plastic surgery procedures. Combating a loss of tissue elasticity, wrinkles, and damaged skin becomes a prime concern. Botox will smooth crow’s feet and forehead lines. Breast lifts are also popular, as women look to restore pre-pregnancy bodies.

60-plus:

Seniors are not immune to their selfie self-image. Sagging, droopy tissue can make the face look tired, unhappy, and unhealthy. To bring back a refreshed, rejuvenated appearance, the above-60 set turns to surgical procedures like the facelift, blepharoplasty (or an eyelid lift), and the brow lift.

Men:

The male patient focuses more on wrinkles, not skin laxity like women. Men look at their selfie and lean towards Botox, dermal rhinoplasty, and hair transplants.
