Skin Is In!!! Did You Know, May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month.... Short term effects of overexposure to the sun include tanning, burning, blistering, and peeling. However, the long term effects pose increased risks for skin cancer as well as dry, wrinkled, skin. You can still maintain your skins glow through the summer fun, here are a few tips:
1) Avoid outdoor exposure between 10am - 2pm as the UV rays are most intense during this time.
2) Take extra precaution on extremely hot, humid, and windy days as these conditions can exacerbate the harmful effects of UV rays.
3) Wear sun protection even on cloudy days. UV rays are always present and are the cause of sunburns; therefore it does not need to be bright and hot to acquire a sunburn.
4) The term "healthy tan" is a myth. A tan is simply a sign that the body has been overexposed to UV radiation and has produced color to protect itself; therefore it does not matter if the tan is acquired from a tanning bed or straight from the sun.
The American Institute for Cancer Research estimates that about 1/3 of the 1.5 million cancers that occur every year in the US could be prevented by following simple guidelines like these. |
