Embarrassing body problems. Everybody’s got them, but not everybody has to live with them. Sometimes, it can seem as though your body is working against you and doing its best to make sure you’re embarrassed. Whether you’re always sweating, have developed visible veins on your legs or face, or are dealing with the development of male breasts, you don’t have to live with these issues.
Take a look at a few common and embarrassing body problems and see what you can do to correct them.
Most people sweat from time to time. It’s how your body cools itself off. But some people sweat a lot more than others, especially in the underarm area. It can seem as if no amount of antiperspirant is enough to keep the sweating at bay. You might find yourself wearing blazers and jackets, even in the heat of summer, to cover up sweat stains and wet underarms.
If that describes you, don’t worry. There is a way to deal with excessive sweating. Botox, the injection commonly used to reduce the appearance of frown lines and crow’s feet, is also FDA approved for treating excessive sweating, a condition known as hyperhidrosis.
How does Botox keep you from sweating? The active ingredient, botulinum toxin, keeps certain nerves from communicating with the overactive sweat glands. For as long as a year after treatment, those sweat glands aren’t able to produce sweat.
People often express concern for their sweat glands when they learn how Botox works. Never fear, though. Botox won’t cause excessive sweat to build up in the body. When the glands are treated with the injection, they simply stop producing sweat. You won’t sweat more in other areas to compensate.
Treatment with Botox usually takes about 30 minutes. Results last from six months up to a full year, after which you can repeat the treatment to keep the sweat away.
The exact reason why some guys develop male breasts, also known as gynecomastia, isn’t always clear. Some men develop breast tissue as a result of hormone changes in their bodies or because they are taking certain medications. Some guys put on weight and gain extra tissue or fat in the breast area. In some cases, alcohol use or a medical condition can lead to the development of male breasts.
Knowing the cause of this embarrassing body problem can help you and your surgeon determine the best way to treat it. There are cases where male breasts diminish or go away on their own. In other instances, surgery, such as a breast reduction, is needed to get rid of the unwanted breast tissue. If the breasts seem enlarged due to excess fat in the area, liposuction might be the best option for treating them.
Whether it’s on the upper lip, under the arms or in the bikini area, unwanted hair can be a considerable source of embarrassment. Women and men spend lots of time and money trying to get rid of hair in certain areas, only to have it return again and again. If you’re tired of bleaching, waxing, shaving or using a depilatory cream, there is a permanent way to get rid of hair.
Laser hair removal works on a variety of areas of the body. Although older methods required you to grow out the unwanted hair, advances in technology allow you to treat hair that is very short. The treatment works by directing the energy from a laser beam into the follicle and destroying it. Older methods of laser hair removal were only recommended for patients with light or fair complexions, but the more advanced treatments available today are suitable for people of all skin types.
You can develop a beer belly, or potbelly, even if you don’t drink beer. No matter the reason for its existence, having a bit of a tummy pouch can be an embarrassing experience. You might feel self-conscious at the beach or by the pool or have trouble finding clothing that fits.
Potbellies can persist even if you exercise and follow a healthy diet, due to stubborn fat in the abdominal area. You might also have a bit of loose or sagging skin that makes it look like you have a bit of a belly. Depending on the cause of your tummy pouch, either liposuction or a tummy tuck can help. Liposuction removes the extra fat deposits from the area, creating a flatter abdomen. A tummy tuck can also eliminate unwanted fat and reduce excess skin in the area.
Spider veins are miniature varicose veins that look like little webs just under the surface of the skin. They can form on the legs or the face and are often a source of embarrassment. While there are things you can do to minimize the risk of developing spider veins, such as avoiding sun exposure and wearing compression stockings, only treatment will get rid of existing veins.
Laser vein therapy is one treatment option for spider veins. The treatment involves directing laser energy to the veins. The veins absorb the energy, close up, and ultimately fade from view. Depending on the severity of your veins and how they respond, you might need a couple of treatments to get the best results.
