Breast Reduction Surgery for Women (and Men!)

12/27/2013 by Dr. Vitenas

About Your Breast ReductionThere are a number of great reasons to have breast reduction surgery. In fact, a recent ABC News article showcased tennis star Simona Halep, who cited competitive needs as well as back pain relief for her decision to size down from a 34DD to 34C.

Her choice to have surgery wasn’t met with unanimous support, naturally, but more and more women are turning to breast reduction as a way to enhance their quality of life.

Why Choose Breast Reduction Surgery?

Part of the decision will be aesthetic. This might seem odd in a world where breast enhancement is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures, but with age, large breasts can begin to sag, and breast reduction can help restore a more youthful shape.

There will also be almost immediate relief from the following physical symptoms:

  • back pain
  • neck strain
  • pain in the shoulders
  • bra strap indentations in the shoulders
  • chafing under the breasts

The breasts are effectively reshaped and relocated so that they are lifted to a higher position, and are made lighter. It is the reduction in volume with the relocation that reduces strain on the upper body and back, thereby relieving the patient of associated aches and pains.

While it has been relatively common among older women, the trend towards younger women undergoing the surgery is quite recent. Those who have had the surgery find that they have renewed confidence, as well as offering the possibility to increase athletic activity without having to resort to wearing two sports bras, as in the case of Carly Mortensen, also quoted in the ABC News piece.

The Rise of Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)

Another trend is for men to have breast reduction surgery. Known as gynecomastia, enlarged male breasts have many causes – from medical conditions and drug use, to weight issues – and the solution involves removing fat and/or glandular tissue to reduce the size of the breast.

True gynecomastia is a medical condition resulting from excess glandular tissue, and this is improved by first addressing any underlying causes, then with surgical intervention if necessary to excise the glandular tissue.  Pseudogynecomastia is an enlarged male breast caused by excess fat. Diet and exercise or liposuction may be recommended.

One or both breasts can be reduced, as required, and the results are a flatter, firmer breast, with virtually no visible scarring. Typically, men can return to work within a week or so, with fuller recovery taking several weeks. During the recovery period a pressure garment may need to be worn, and exercise should be limited.

The recovery period for women is slightly longer, and due to the nature of the surgery, there will be more visible scarring. However, it will fade with time, and is usually easily concealed by a bra, bikini top or swimsuit. Examples of the surgery can be seen in the before and after photos on the web site.

Patients will also have the chance to view photos of similar surgeries at the first consultation, where Dr. Vitenas will discuss the possible options and likely outcomes. As with any cosmetic surgery, the success of the surgery depends on having realistic expectations and a thorough understanding of the procedure – something that Dr. Vitenas prides himself on going through with candidates for all surgical procedures.
