Dads: Treat Yourself to a “Daddy Do-Over”

09/12/2019 by Dr. Vitenas

Although plastic surgery and cosmetic treatments have traditionally been more popular with female patients, more and more men have started to show an interest in aesthetic procedures over the last several years. Between 2000 and 2018, the number of male plastic surgery patients in the U.S. increased by nearly 30%, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Around 1.3 million men had some sort of cosmetic procedure in 2018.

One option that has gained popularity recently is the “Daddy Do-Over.” Similar to the Mommy Makeover, the Daddy Do-Over is a selection of treatments designed to help men look and feel their best after becoming parents. If you’re a man who’s looking to improve his “dad bod,” learn more about the Daddy Do-Over to see if it’s the right choice for you.

Why Have a Daddy Do-Over?

Men don’t get pregnant, give birth or breastfeed. But that doesn’t mean that their bodies don’t change as they get older. A guy who was once able to eat anything he liked without putting on a pound might suddenly wake up and find a roll of fat around his middle. Even guys who spend a lot of time working out might find that it takes a bit more effort to stay in shape as the years go by.

A Daddy Do-Over can target areas of concern that are common in men as they get older, such as gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts), a bit of extra fat in the abdominal area, and a loss of definition in the face.

Along with helping to rejuvenate a guy’s looks, there are a few other benefits to a Daddy Do-Over. Like a Mommy Makeover, the procedure combines several surgeries into one package deal. Combining surgeries means there is less overall downtime afterward. Having multiple procedures performed at once also helps to reduce the cost of the Do-Over.

What Procedures are Part of a Daddy Do-Over?

Just as the Mommy Makeover can be fully customized to meet a woman’s individual needs, the Daddy Do-Over is also customizable based on the concerns of the patient. It might include male breast reduction surgery if a man is dealing with gynecomastia. It might also include liposuction for men who have started to notice areas of stubborn fat, such as around the abdomen or under the chin.

While Mommy Makeovers often focus on body procedures, it’s not uncommon for a Daddy Do-Over to include facial procedures as well. Among the most popular surgeries for men are rhinoplasty and eyelid surgery. Eyelid surgery can help a man look more awake and youthful while rhinoplasty can create a more masculine appearance. Some men also opt for a facelift or non-surgical rejuvenating treatments, like Botox, as part of their “Do-Over.”

How to Prep for a Daddy Do-Over

The first step in preparing for a Daddy Do-Over is to schedule a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon. If you want a combination of facial and body procedures, your best bet is to find a surgeon who performs both. Some surgeons only specialize in facial surgeries while others only perform body surgeries.

During your consultation, you’ll discuss your goals and expectations with the doctor. They’ll let you know what you can expect from each surgery and which procedures could help you reach your goals. Another part of the consultation is a review of your medical history. Your surgeon will want to know about any current medical conditions you have and what you’re doing to treat them. They will also ask about past conditions.

If you decide to go ahead with the Do-Over, your surgeon will give you instructions to help you prepare, including directions on what to do in the weeks leading up to the surgery and on the day of the procedure. You might have to stop taking certain supplements or over-the-counter medications as you prep for surgery.

What to Expect After a Daddy Do-Over

What you can expect after your surgery will depend on how many and what type of procedures you have as part of your Do-Over. Usually, you will need to take at least a week or two off from work to rest and recover. You’ll also have to avoid certain activities, such as exercise and other physically strenuous activities, for a few weeks afterward.

There might be some side effects from the surgeries, such as swelling and bruising. Your surgeon will give you instructions to help you cope with any side effects and to help you heal and get back on your feet as soon as possible.
