Where Do I Go For Unbiased Information?

09/13/2011 by Dr. Vitenas

Information for Surgery in HoustonInformation overload is the only way to describe the piles of facts, figures, data, and opinions floating around on the Internet these days about cosmetic surgery. All the information we could ever want is available, and then some, but ALL of the information is not quality. So how can you decipher the good information about plastic surgery from biased, slanted rubbish?

There are a few things you should keep in mind when searching for information on cosmetic procedures and products on the Internet:

  • Does the website sell a product? This is a good sign the site is merely pushing a product than really giving an unbiased product review.
  • Who sponsors the website? It should be a medical organization you have heard of, or a board certificated doctor you respect, or be supported by a major university or hospital system. If you find the source questionable at all, it is best to move on.
  • Does the website have contact information listed? A reputable source will always state who they are, where they are located, and a phone number. This is a good sign they are willing to answer your questions about the site and information on it.
  • Is the information up to date? It is important to make sure you are looking at current information. Information on medical procedures evolves constantly. An article that is even a couple of years old can mean outdated and inaccurate.
  • Below is a list of some great sites to get started researching some cosmetic surgery procedures and products:
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons
The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgeons
Realself.com – unbiased consumer reviews on cosmetic procedures
Medline Plus – Health information from the national Library of Medicine

In a world of social media, smart phones, and Google – it is much easier to go to the internet for information instead of heading to the library. So remember, use your good judgment and if you question the site, keep on going. And if the Internet does not seem to be able answer your questions – call Vitenas Cosmetic Surgery at 281-484-0088 and one of our patient care coordinators will be happy to speak with you. We will answer your questions fully and provide sources where you can go for even more information.
