More and More Men Seeking Cosmetic Surgery

09/27/2013 by Dr. Vitenas

Men Seeking Cosmetic Surgery HoustonIt took a while for men to catch on or perhaps catch up, but facial plastic surgery for men is definitely on the increase, according to 2012 figures. Most popular are nose jobs, followed by eyelid surgery, and even male breast surgery (reduction) is in the top 5. Interestingly, it places above a facelift, but below liposuction. This may suggest anecdotally that men are more concerned about their body than their face.

On the other hand, there’s a strong showing in non-invasive cosmetic surgery procedures, with the most popular being Botox and hair removal. Dermal fillers and chemical peels make up only about 16% of all non-invasive procedures performed on men, according to figures from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Now, we all know that vanity plays a part, and that many of these patients will be single, but it does raise an interesting question… Just how long will it take before “His ‘n Hers” offers start appearing? After all, both sexes seem to be aiming for the same areas (face, breast, tummy, butt, and usually in that order!) and for the same reasons. Those reasons include work and personal life, not to mention an added dose of self-confidence.

Both men and women want to look as if they are on the ball, all the time, in their professional capacity. This is often impossible if you’re working 12-hour days. Fortunately, it just takes a quick trip to your local cosmetic surgeon during your lunch break to reduce many of those visible signs of stress and fatigue.

At the same time, and unfortunately, separations and divorces are on the increase, which means that potentially there are a larger number of older singles looking for love. It’s equally possible that happily married (or happily non-married) couples are looking at each other and coming to the modern conclusion that it’s time to have a bit of work done to increase their attractiveness, mutually.

After all, as noted by TheAtlantic.com website, the stigma once attached to cosmetic surgery is slowly being removed. That’s thanks, in part, to the number of celebrities and those in public office who openly admit to going under the knife.

Here’s an excerpt from that article:

“Interestingly, many women are saying their goal is not necessarily to look younger, but more to look refreshed and reflect how they feel on the inside,” notes dermatologist Doris Day. “With the tools we have available today, we can accomplish this with a very natural and beautiful outcome. People are more upfront about wanting to look their best.”

This may or may not surprise, but at the same time it’s clear from the statistics that it’s not just about women. Men, too, now want to look their best.
