Seven Common Treatment Areas for Liposuction

01/14/2016 by Dr. Vitenas

Where do you have extra, unwanted fat that doesn’t seem to go away, no matter how much you exercise or how healthily you eat? Although everyone’s body is different, and no two people are exactly alike, there are some areas of the body that are more popular treatment areas for liposuction that others. For example, you probably don’t hear a lot of people talking about getting liposuction on their calves, but you might hear plenty of people saying that they wish they could get lipo to get rid of that extra bit of flab on their tummy.

Area #1 – the Abdomen

The abdominal area is actually made up of a few treatment areas when it comes to liposuction. There is the lower abdomen, which is located just about the hips. Typically, excess fat around the lower abdomen results in a muffin top, or that unsightly bulge of fat around the waistband of your jeans. There are a few things to consider before getting liposuction of the lower abdomen, such as the elasticity of your skin and the amount of fat. If you’ve got a bit of a bulge to due excess skin or if it’s likely that removing your excess fat will leave you with droopy skin around the tummy, your surgeon might advise a tummy tuck, which will tighten the skin and help tone the muscles in the abdomen, either instead of or along with liposuction.

The upper abdomen is the area between your navel and the rib cage. You do not necessarily need to have to have liposuction there at the same time you have liposuction of the lower abdomen.  However, it is quite common for both places to be treated together.

Area #2 – Arms

There is no need to limit yourself to long sleeve shirts any longer. If you’ve got a bit of extra fat in the upper arm area, which is creating that flabby, “bat wing” look, liposuction can help you get the shapely arms you’re after. Typically, liposuction in the arm area is combined with an arm lift, to remove extra skin. If you are not dealing with a lot of excess skin, though, or if your skin still has a fair amount of elasticity, liposuction may be sufficient on its own.

Area #3 – the Back

You put your bra on in the morning and rolls of fat seem to pop out from beneath it. While there are countless workouts online that promise to blast away your back fat, sometimes the only way to get rid of those bra bulges is to surgically remove the fat. The back can be an ideal area for liposuction, since the skin there tends to be more elastic and thick than other areas of the body, allowing you to get the shape you want without a lot of surgery.

Area #4 – the Chest

Liposuction of the chest area can be performed on both men and women. When the surgery is performed on men, it is often part of the process of Gynecomastia correction, or the treatment of enlarged breast tissue.  When performed on women, it is often part of a breast reduction surgery. Liposuction that is directed through the armpit area can help improve the shape of the breasts after the reduction procedure.

Area #5 – Flanks

What are the flanks? If you put your hands on your back, right at the top of your hip bones, you should be able to feel them. The flanks are the back of the waist or the back of the love handles. Having liposuction to remove excess fat from the flanks can help give women a more defined waistline and can help create the often-desired hourglass shape.

Area #6 – Love Handles

The love handles are located on the front of the body, by the waist. Despite their name, most people do not love having them. Liposuction to remove the extra fat from the waistline can reduce or eliminate the love handles, giving you a more defined and narrow waist.

Area #7 – Thighs

Liposuction can help remove that extra, unwanted fat along the thighs, sometimes called Saddlebags. Removing fat from the thighs can enhance a person’s all over body shape and flatter the shape of the buttocks. While fat removal on its own can be enough to help some people get the thigh contour they are after, a thigh lift may also be needed to remove extra skin.  The thigh lift can fully shape and tone the upper legs, as well.

If you are ready to get rid of an area of unwanted fat, Dr. Paul Vitenas, a Houston-based plastic surgeon, can help. Dr. Vitenas performs liposuction on hundreds of patients each year, using a super wet technique that allows him to remove large amounts of fat in a safe and effective manner.
