Red, purple, or blue – Spider Veins come in a variety ofcolors and can be present in any number of places. These vessels can be both unsightly and embarrassing, detracting from otherwise beautiful skin. With a proper medical evaluation, though, Spider Veins can be eliminated without any problem.
What Are Spider Veins?
Spider Veins are the result of damaged blood vessel valves. When these valves are no longer functioning properly, blood will back up, causing the vein to swell. Spider Veins are most commonly experienced on the legs and on the face. Women are also more likely than men to have this problem. Standing for long periods of time, hormonal changes, sun exposure, and injuries can all contribute to the appearance of Spider Veins.
Spider Vein Treatment:
Spider Veins can be eliminated, completely removing any unsightly evidence of the vessels. Using Laser Vein Therapy, fast pulses of intense light are directed at the Spider Vein, coagulating the blood. This will cause the vein to disintegrate; over the following weeks, the blood will be naturally reabsorbed by the body.
Laser Vein Therapy is performed in the physician’s operating suite and takes less than 30 minutes to complete. Typically, it takes from 1-2 treatments, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, to fully resolve an area. A laser treatment causes very little discomfort, and patients are able to return to the their normal activities the same afternoon as their treatment. Bruising and discoloration may be present after a session, but will quickly resolve on its own. Full results from Laser Vein Therapy will be visible two to three weeks after treatment.
Spider Vein vs. Varicose Vein
There is a significant difference between Spider Veins and Varicose Veins. Spider Veins can be safely and efficiently removed but Varicose Veins are more serious. Unlike Spider Veins, Varicose Veins have a raised, rope-like appearance. These veins are the result of damaged valves, as well, but can be the result of a more severe circulatory problem. Varicose Veins can lead to life-threatening complications, so they should never be treated without proper medical evaluation and testing.
