Did Botox Cosmetic just get its first wrinkle? Xeomin, one of the first direct competitors of this fabulous line reducing neurotoxin, has just been approved for public use. On November 1, 2011, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) placed its final seal of approval for Xeomin, as a safe and effective treatment for moderate to severe frown lines between the eyes.
Xeomin, much like Botox Cosmetic and Dysport, is a botulinum toxin type A injectable. While it was just approved for approved for treatment of the “11’s” between the eyes, it has been used for the treatment of cervical dystonia, abnormal neck pain, for years. Xeomin is also an international sensation, now used in over 20 countries.
There are differences in neurotoxins, though. Unlike Botox Cosmetic, Xeomin does not need to be refrigerated, which simplifies its distribution and is a big plus for physicians. Xeomin is also considered “naked”, containing no additives. This means there is less chance of the body developing any antibodies against the neurotoxin. Naturally developed to fight invaders, antibodies can prevent a neurotoxin from having its desired effects.
Xeomin does work similarly to Botox Cosmetic, blocking the signals from the nerves to the muscles in the injection area. The results are muscles that cannot contract, therefore reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Both neurotoxins take up to two weeks for their full effects to occur and have results that will last up to about five months.
Remember, Xeomin and Botox Cosmetic should not be used interchangeably. You should only let a skilled, board certified physician administer any injectable. Xeomin and Botox Cosmetic should never be injected in beauty salons, malls, or at Xeomin parties in the home.
