Breast Asymmetry Correction in Houston

If one breast has always been a little fuller, sat a little higher or simply had its own personality, you’re in good company. Most women have some difference between their two sides, and for many, it never crosses their minds. When that difference starts to shape which bras you buy or which tops you skip, though, a correction can bring your breasts into balance.

At Vitenas Cosmetic Surgery, double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Vitenas addresses breast asymmetry with implants, fat transfer or a combination of the two. With more than 30 years of experience, he is one of Houston’s leading specialists, having performed more than 10,000 breast surgeries throughout his distinguished career.

Discover Why Patients Across Texas Choose Dr. Vitenas for Breast Asymmetry Correction

“One thing I love about Dr. Vitenas is he will tell you what will and will not look good and why you should choose one option over the other. He will give it to you honestly, and I appreciate that…my surgery was not a typical lift, but a lift of both breasts and a major reduction of one breast to correct my body’s natural asymmetry (one breast was roughly a C while the other roughly a DD).

I could not be happier with my surgery!! It has already drastically changed how I feel about myself!! It honestly changed my life, too. Before I would have to try on multiple different bra and top combinations before going anywhere, and I was limited in the types of tops and dresses I could wear just so I could make sure my breasts didn’t look as uneven. Now it is such a relief to be able to go in a store and buy a normal bra and any shirt or dress I want!!”

Breast Asymmetry in Houston: What You Need to Know

Breast asymmetry means your breasts differ from each other in size, shape, volume or position. The difference might be a half-cup gap you notice only in certain clothes, or it could be a full cup size or more. In a 2018 study of 304 women evaluated for breast surgery, 91% had at least one type of asymmetry, the most common being uneven nipple position.

Asymmetry correction starts with figuring out why your breasts differ. When one breast simply has less volume, Dr. Vitenas can add fullness to the smaller side with a breast implant or fat transfer. Sometimes, both breasts get enhanced, just by different amounts. When the difference lies more in shape or nipple position, he may pair volume with a breast lift on one or both sides. For a naturally larger breast, he may reduce that side with a breast reduction instead. The technique is chosen based on your anatomy and long-term goals.

What Causes Breast Asymmetry?

Your breasts are sisters, not twins. They develop independently, respond to hormones a little differently, and change at their own pace throughout your life. Here are some of the most common reasons two sides end up looking different:

Natural development

Breasts often grow at different rates during puberty, and a gap that shows up in your teens may simply stay.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Many women find that one breast produces more milk or changes more than the other, leaving a lasting difference in volume.

Weight changes and hormones

Gaining or losing weight, menopause and other hormonal shifts don’t always affect both breasts equally.

Tuberous breasts

This condition can cause a narrow base, a higher breast crease and a puffier areola, and it often affects one side more than the other.

Chest wall differences

Conditions like scoliosis or Poland syndrome can change the shape of the chest itself, which alters how each breast sits.

Previous surgery

Prior breast augmentation, implant complications or a biopsy can leave the breasts mismatched. For implant-related concerns, breast implant revision is often the answer.

Am I a Candidate for Breast Asymmetry Correction?

You may be a good candidate if the difference between your breasts bothers you, affects how clothing fits or has you reaching for a padded insert on one side. Maybe swimsuit shopping has become a strategy session. Good candidates are in good overall health, nonsmokers (or willing to quit before and after surgery) and at a stable weight.

Timing matters, too. Dr. Vitenas wants breast development to be complete before correcting a size difference, since a gap during the teen years can narrow on its own. If you’re planning a pregnancy, you might hold off, because pregnancy can shift your results. You can still come in for a consultation in the meantime and get a clear picture of your options.

Implants or Fat Transfer: Which Works Best for Uneven Breasts?

Both approaches can create a beautiful balance. They just get there differently, and the right choice depends on how large the difference is, how much fullness you want overall and how much fat you have to spare.

Breast Implants for Asymmetry

Implants give Dr. Vitenas precise control over volume. He can place a different size in each breast, use different profiles or enhance only the smaller side. With saline implants, he can even adjust the fill volume during surgery to fine-tune the match. Implants are usually the better fit when the size difference is larger than about a cup, or when you’d like both breasts to be fuller than they are now.

Fat Transfer for Asymmetry

Fat transfer uses your own fat, removed with liposuction from areas like your abdomen, flanks or thighs, to add volume to the smaller breast. The result feels completely natural, and you get some body contouring along the way. Fat transfer works best for mild to moderate differences. Your body naturally reabsorbs a portion of the transferred fat over the first few months, so some patients choose a second session to perfect the match.

The Dr. Vitenas Experience: What to Expect From Start to Finish

Your Consultation: Every Breast Asymmetry Journey Begins Here

Dr. Vitenas will talk with you about what you’d like to change, then examine and measure both breasts, including the nipple position, breast crease, chest wall and skin quality. He’ll explain what’s causing the difference and which approach makes the most sense for your body. You’ll also review before-and-after photos of patients with similar anatomy.

Dr. Vitenas keeps a room with more than 250 implant sizers. He has you try them on in a properly fitted, unpadded bra and a form-fitting T-shirt, so you can see the subtle differences between sizes and profiles for yourself. For patients with asymmetry, this setup makes it easy to compare different volumes on each side and choose the pairing that looks balanced to you. You’ll also discuss pricing, financing and scheduling with your patient coordinator.

Pre-Op: How Should I Prepare for Breast Asymmetry Surgery?

Stop smoking, avoid medications and supplements that thin the blood (including aspirin, NSAIDs, vitamin E and fish oil) and complete any lab work needed for medical clearance. Arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours. Dr. Vitenas will give you detailed pre-op instructions ahead of your surgery date.

Surgery Day: What Happens During Breast Asymmetry Surgery?

Breast asymmetry correction is performed under general anesthesia in Dr. Vitenas’ AAAASF-accredited surgical center, with a board-certified anesthesiologist monitoring you throughout. Most procedures take one to three hours, depending on the technique and whether you’re combining treatments.

For implants, Dr. Vitenas creates a pocket with a little extra space, allowing the breasts to move more naturally as you do. For fat transfer, he harvests fat with liposuction and strategically injects it into the smaller breast until the desired size is achieved. Once your procedure is complete, you’ll be brought to the recovery room. You’ll be able to head home the same day.

Breast Asymmetry Recovery Timeline

Dr. Vitenas uses a long-acting local anesthetic, which helps most patients wake up with tightness rather than pain. Your exact recovery will depend on the approach Dr. Vitenas uses. Fat transfer patients also have some soreness at the liposuction sites. Here’s a general timeline of what you can expect after your breast asymmetry surgery:

Days 1-3:

Tightness, swelling and mild discomfort are normal. Most patients need prescription medication for a day or two, then switch to Tylenol.

Week 1:

Many patients return to desk work within several days. Avoid lifting and strenuous activity.

Weeks 2-6:

Bruising and swelling fade. Most patients are cleared for exercise and normal activities by about six weeks.

Months 3-6:

Implants settle into their final position, and any transferred fat that’s going to stay has established itself. This is when you’ll see your true, balanced result.

You’ll have regular follow-ups with Dr. Vitenas throughout your recovery, and all post-op visits are included in your price.

“Asymmetries aren’t necessarily bad. We all have a little bit of asymmetry. What I’m looking for when I look at any part of the body is, ‘What can I do to make this look better?’ Sometimes you have to add a little bit, and sometimes you have to take away a little bit.”

Breast Asymmetry: Frequently Asked Questions

How much does breast asymmetry correction cost in Houston?

The cost depends on the technique Dr. Vitenas recommends. Breast augmentation starts at $7,000, and fat transfer starts at $8,500. Combining approaches or adding a lift will adjust the total. All pricing is all-inclusive, covering surgeon fees, anesthesia, the surgical facility, implants and follow-up care. Financing through CareCredit, Cherry, and Alphaeon Credit is available.

Is it normal for one breast to be bigger than the other?

Yes. Research shows the vast majority of women have at least some difference in size, shape or nipple position between their breasts. Uneven breasts are a normal variation. Correction is simply an option if the difference bothers you or affects how your clothes fit.

Can you put an implant in only one breast?

Yes, in some cases. When one breast already has the size and shape you like, Dr. Vitenas may place an implant only in the smaller side. However, most patients choose to place implants in both breasts, which tends to create a closer match in shape, feel and how they age over time.

Can breast asymmetry be corrected without implants?

Yes. Fat transfer can add volume to the smaller breast using your own tissue, and it’s a great fit for mild to moderate differences. When the larger breast is the concern, a breast reduction can bring it into balance. A breast lift can also correct differences in nipple height and shape.

How long do the results of fat transfer to the breast last?

Once the transferred fat establishes a blood supply, usually within about three to six months, it behaves like the rest of your body’s fat and stays long-term. Significant weight changes can affect the treated breast, so maintaining a stable weight helps protect your results.

What are the risks of breast asymmetry surgery?

As with any surgery, risks include bleeding, infection, changes in nipple sensation and unfavorable scarring. Implants carry additional risks such as capsular contracture and implant malposition. With fat transfer, some fat may be reabsorbed, and a small difference in size may remain. Dr. Vitenas will review these risks with you during your consultation.
