Implant Shape
Implants are available in two different shapes: anatomical (teardrop) and round. After many years of debate about which implant produces a more natural result, we now know that there is little to no difference. A 2017 study showed that no one could tell the difference between round or teardrop implants once placed and healed. For this reason, very few surgeons continue to use teardrop (anatomical) implants. Implant Placement
Women also have two options when it comes to implant placement: behind the breast tissue but above the chest muscle (subfascial placement), or below the chest muscle (submuscular placement). - Step 5: Close the Incisions. Once the implants are in place, the incisions are closed using sutures and surgical tape.

Afterward, you’ll spend a short time (usually 20-30 minutes) in our recovery area before heading home the same day with your post-op instructions. The effects of general anesthesia can impair your ability to drive for up to 24 hours, so you’ll have to arrange for a friend or family member to take you home and stay with you the day of surgery.
Breast Augmentation Recovery Timeline
Your recovery begins as soon as your breast augmentation is complete. Every woman heals differently, but there are general milestones you can expect over the next several weeks.
- 0 Weeks: Immediately after surgery, you’ll experience some pressure, swelling and tightness in the chest, which can vary depending on the size of the implants you have chosen and your anatomy. These side effects are normal and gradually subside after about 48 hours. Dr. Vitenas uses a long-acting local anesthetic to keep pain to a minimum during the early recovery period.
