Mastopexy, sometimes referred to as a breast lift, is a surgical procedure that was created to lift sagging breasts. The procedure can improve drooping and a decrease in volume which may result from age, gravity, or pregnancy. Mastopexy is often combined with a breast augmentation for additional volume and upper pole fullness (fullness in the upper portion of the breast). Ideal patients for a breast lift include women who are healthy with a loss of shape of the breast and nipple malposition.
Dr. Vitenas performs his Mastopexy procedure at the Houston Surgery Center, a fully accredited outpatient surgery center located in the same facility as his practice. The surgery generally takes a total of two to three hours.
Dr. Vitenas will begin the Mastopexy by performing an inverted T incision. This will circle the areola, run vertically down the breast, then across the crease. Excess, sagging tissue is then removed. The nipple and areola are elevated to a higher position and sutures are placed.
The recovery period after the breast lift usually takes less than ten days. While there is only mild discomfort after a breast lift, Dr. Vitenas will provide pain medications for a peaceful recovery. Swelling and bruising are common, and some numbness may also occur. Patients are often required to a soft support bra for several weeks after surgery. Most women are back at work in only a few days. It is recommended that there be no strenuous exercise or activities for at least six weeks following the Mastopexy procedure.
Breast Lift Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Mastopexy procedure?
Mastopexy, also known as a breast lift, is a surgical technique to lift drooping breasts, improving sagging and a decrease in volume that may have occurred from age, gravity, or pregnancy. The Mastopexy may be performed with a breast augmentation for patients seeking additional volume and upper pole fullness.
Am I a good candidate for the Mastopexy?
If you are in good medical condition, and are seeking to improve a loss of shape of the breast and nipple malposition, you may make a good candidate for the Mastopexy procedure. Patients seeking additional volume and upper pole fullness may be candidates for a combined breast lift and breast augmentation.
During the breast lift Houston consultation, Dr. Vitenas will review your medical history and perform a physical exam. He will explain the breast lift options, and show before/after photographs of his previous Mastopexy patients. After discussing your physical desires, Dr. Vitenas will determine if the breast lift is the right procedure to achieve the intended results. If so, the exact cost will be determined and a breast lift surgical plan will be created.
Dr. Vitenas performs the breast lift at the Houston Surgery Center. This accredited outpatient surgery center is located in the same building as Vitenas Cosmetic Surgery.

What anesthesia can I expect during my Mastopexy?
The breast lift procedure will be completed using general anesthesia.
How does Dr. Vitenas perform the breast lift procedure?
The breast lift starts with an inverted T incision, which circles the areola, runs vertically downward from the nipple, and horizontally across the breast crease. Sagging, stretched skin and fatty tissue will be removed before the nipple and areola are lifted to a higher, more desirable position.
How long will my Mastopexy take to perform?
The breast lift normally takes two to three hours to complete.
Where are the breast lift incisions placed?
Mastopexy is performed using an inverted T incision. This will go around the areola, down to the breast crease, and then horizontally below the breast.
Is the breast lift considered painful?
While the breast lift is not a painful procedure, Dr. Vitenas will provide the needed pain medications for a comfortable recovery.
How long is the Mastopexy recovery?
A breast lift recovery will take from seven to ten days.
What is expected during the breast lift recovery?
Swelling, bruising, and numbness may occur initially after a breast lift procedure. There is little pain, but some tenderness may be experienced. Patients will need to wear a soft support bra for several weeks following their Mastopexy. The recovery process usually takes less than a week.
When can I return to work following a breast lift?
Women are normally feeling well enough to return to work and school routines in only a few days after their procedure.
Can I exercise following my Mastopexy?
No strenuous exercise or vigorous activities are recommended during the six weeks following a breast lift procedure.
What are the risks associated with a breast lift?
As the breast lift is a surgical procedure, there is a small chance for bleeding, infection, delayed wound healing, and a loss of nipple sensation to occur. However, using a Board Certified surgeon, like Dr. Vitenas, decreases this risk dramatically.
Can I finance the breast lift procedure?
Yes, Vitenas Cosmetic Surgery offers financing through CareCredit. Speak with our office for additional information on payment options, or visit our financing page.
